17-year-old Paloma only wanted to hold a séance to contact her dead father. She never thought she would be kicked out of school and end up in an isolated convent. When, yet again, Paloma holds a séance in the hope of contacting her father, she awakens an entity that has been dormant for years. And then, the body count begins. Someone doesn’t want the secret out…

Madre Estela remained standing by the door. “Get a bucket and fill it with water.”

Her hypercritical eyes sliced through my self-worth as I grabbed one of the metal buckets, lifted it into the sink, and turned on the faucet. I watched, transfixed, as the water gushed like a torrent spurting from an open artery. The cold spray raised goosebumps on my arms.

Madre Estela snapped her fingers. “Move.”

As I hauled the bucket to the door, some of the water slushed over the edge and splattered to the floor.

“Add the detergent,” she said stiffly, irritated by my clumsiness.

I chose a green bottle, twisted the cap, and poured. The acrid pine smell stung my nostrils.

“Get a sponge and a brush from there. Get going. We don’t have all evening—unless you want to work in the dark.”

I gritted my teeth, but pretended not to be bothered. I suspected that the one thing that this nun couldn’t stand was indifference.

Outside, it was almost dusk. In spite of the intense screeching of the coquíes, the drum of the waterfall hit my ears. It was louder now than the last time I’d been here. How was that possible?

I felt a drop of rain. Great.

Madre Estela put one hand out, palm up. “My, my. What’s this?” She looked chagrined, and I suddenly realized why. If it rained, I would have to go inside, ruining her plans. “What are you standing there for? Start scrubbing.”

I was tempted to throw the bucket of greenish water at her face. Instead, I prayed for rain as I walked across the rose garden. Once at the gate, I glanced back at her.

“You’ll work until I come for you, understood?” she said, hands on hips in her usual stance. She pointed to one of the second-floor windows. “I’ll be watching from there.”

And that was it. She was gone.

For a moment I just stood there. If only my friends could see me now. They would never believe it.

I opened the gate and walked into the graveyard. The statue of Gabriel greeted me, its face fiercer in the dusk. The temperature must have been in the low seventies. I was glad I had my cardigan.

Suddenly, the garden lamp post lit up. I turned, startled. I wasn’t sure if it had automatically switched on or if someone, maybe Madre Estela, had done it from indoors. I glanced up at the second-floor window, expecting to find her face. I had the chilling sensation of being watched. There was nothing. The windows glowed with yellow light, a multitude of feral eyes keeping guard.

However, behind one of the ground-floor windows on the right, a figure appeared. Tall, blurred. Madre Superiora? I was sure that was her office. Yet, something about the shape of the head and the shoulders made me think of…Rubia. What was she doing in Madre Superiora’s office?

Just as abruptly as it’d appeared, the figure vanished from view.

The incident left me strangely unsettled.

Focus.

I splashed some of the water on one of the tombstones and got to work. The sound of hard bristles against stone blocked the hum of the waterfall. Almost.

Go away, damn it.

As I crouched to work on a second tombstone, doing my best not to get wet in the process, something shifted at the edge of my vision. I jumped to my feet, my heart thudding. Gabriel. Its wings had rippled with movement.

Dear God…what’s happening to me?

I rubbed my forehead and grimaced, my fingers shaking.

I felt another drop of rain. If it was going to rain, why didn’t it? The sky was playing with me, too. Mocking me.

I cursed the clouds and started scrubbing again.

I had another sensation of being watched and this time, yes, it was Madre Estela behind the window. I pretended I hadn’t seen her and tried to keep focused on the task at hand.  The water had turned blackish with grime.

I don’t know how long I scrubbed. I lost track of time. But it was dark. My back and shoulders were sore and my hands stung from the harsh detergent.

Madre Estela was long gone from the window.

Half panting, I sat down on the edge of the tombstone and tossed the brush aside in disgust. I looked at the statue again, but it was motionless. I turned to the windows again, my eyes slowly moving from one to the other.

From one to the other.

Expecting to see the face. Wanting to see it.

Nothing.

Yet, that weird sensation of being watched, again.

My gaze shifted to the woods, to the exact place where the cemetery ended and the forest started. There was a path there. Narrow, obscured by the trees. For a long moment I sat, mesmerized. Then I stood up and began to approach it. The breeze picked up as I got closer, carrying with it the cool, slightly pungent smell of the waterfall.

I stopped at the very edge, the darkness enveloping me, the dampness seeping through my clothes.

The wind sighed, rustling the leaves and fluttering my hair.

Icy breath, on the back of my neck.

I’m in here… a voice whispered from the shadows.

I spun around in terror.

Then I hit something hard.

About the book

Meredith Molloney never thought she’d find a mate, let alone someone like Donovan Murry—one of the most powerful Alphas alive. Now that she’s no longer cursed and the evil Luciana Alvarez has been taken care of, she thinks life will finally settle down. Boy, has she never been so wrong

In the middle of the night, Donovan gets a call telling him that his pack has gone to pieces. The news that his second in command has been found brutally murdered has Donovan packing his bags for Ireland, but the last thing Meredith wants to do is leave Texas. She’s heard about how the Celtic Pack are with outsiders. And Donovan has more than a few exes in the pack that will be less than friendly.

Meredith’s never let a few angry wolves stop her, and she’s not about to start now. She’s faced down much worse the past few months. But when she gets there, she finds that it’s not just a few exes who stand in the way between her and her Full Moon Ceremony with Donovan

Meredith is thrust in to a deadly game of pack politics, one the fey have happily joined in on. When the dust settles, she knows she’ll either have everything that she wants or lose it all.

Excerpt

“My court hears things,” Cosette said. “Donovan’s pack was a mess before, and now that he’s mated, it will only get worse. Since you haven’t completed your bond to him yet…” She shook her head. “Trouble is brewing. I can’t tell you much more than that, but I wanted to at least warn you and leave you with a measure of protection.”
“Okay. So a get out jail free card is what exactly?”
“Open it.”
I took the pouch and shook its contents into my hand. It held a single gold coin. One side was smooth as silk, and the other had a ring engraved with the phases of the moon.
A Lunar court coin? “What does it do?”
“Touch the coin and say where you want to go. It’ll take you there. Kind of like Dorothy and her silver shoes.”
“Red.” Her shoes were definitely red.
“Silver in the book. Red in that movie. But however you remember it is fine.”
“I don’t think I’ll forget.”
“Good. It’s a one-use enchantment, so be sure to use it wisely.”
“I don’t know what to say.” I couldn’t thank her. That was a severe no-no with the fey. A thank you implied a debt, and the fey could claim what they were owed in a whole host of unsavory ways.
“Promise me you’ll stay safe. You had my back in the chapel and this is the only thing I can do for you before I get packed off to hide.” Cosette gripped my arm. “If the Weres gang up on you, use the coin to get away.”
That would work if things got really shady, but not under any normal circumstances. “I can’t just run away if I get challenged.”
“Why not?”
“I’d lose. I’d be a disgrace.”
“You’d be alive.”
My blood ran cold. “I’m not the highest rank in the pack, and until Donovan and I have our ceremony, I won’t be. If his pack wants me gone, they can probably make it happen. Running from a challenge would only delay that.” And it scared me how easy it might be.
“Donovan will try to protect you, but he can’t see all the threats. You have to look for the truth.”
“Either way, I’m glad to have some insurance.” I slid the coin back into the pouch and zipped it up. “This was really nice of you.”
“I hope you never need it.”
“Me, too.” I hoped she was wrong. Fighting to join a pack that didn’t want me seemed like the worst idea. But it was Donovan’s pack. If I wanted to be his mate—and I did—then I had to do what I had to do.

Withering Rose

(Once Upon a Curse #2)

Release dare: 17th May 2016

Genre : YA Fantasy/Fairy Tale Retelling

About the Book

 **A USA Today Recommended Series!**

What if Beauty was cursed, and the Beast was the only one who could save her? Don’t miss WITHERING ROSE, a dystopian romance from bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis that reimagines the classic fairy tale of Beauty & The Beast. This is the second book in Once Upon A Curse, a series of interconnected stand-alone novels all set in the same fantasy universe.

“As the heat finally disappeared, I felt the bloom blossom in the very core of my soul, a rose just like my name—a ticking clock hidden behind a façade of beauty. From that moment on, my life would become a countdown, and all I could do was wait and watch as the petals of time slowly started to fall.”

Omorose Bouchene has a secret—magic. There’s only one problem. At the age of seven, an earthquake struck, catapulting her into a new world. A land made of skyscrapers and cell phones. Fast cars and fluorescent lights. A land where magic isn’t supposed to exist and anyone who wields it is the enemy.

But after ten years of hiding, she’s desperate to find a place where she can be free. Because all magic comes with a curse, and her curse is time—every ounce of power she uses strips days off of her life. The clock is winding down, and the only option left is to escape to the realm ruled by a man known only as the Beast. But the king of monsters isn’t what he seems. And the more Omorose opens her heart, the more she comes to realize that the only person she may need to fear is herself.

The Review   ★★★★☆

This is book 2 in the once upon a curse series and I must say I actually enjoyed reading this one.
The story kicks off with a 7year old princess Omorose who is traveling with her father to visit her betrothed. But their journey is cut short by an earthquake which rips her world and everything she knows away. She awakes to inherit her mother’s gift and curse and by this it could only mean one thing, it was going to be her and her father from now on. For years, Omorose has hidden her powers and kept her head down until she can no longer contain it and so she decides to go in search of the king of beasts where she may belong as it seems magic is not forbidden in the mountains where he lives. But the king of beasts is not quite who she thinks he is. But the biggest question of all is if he can help her before she is consumed by her curse.
What did I think? Well.. I honestly liked that the author spun this fairy tale on its head and did something fun with it. The plot was really brilliant, a bit predictable but the again I don’t have any issues with predictability. The characters in this story were well written and I liked how Jade and Asher from book 1 were somehow part of this story.
I liked the main characters, Omorose was awesome although it seemed she had to give herself a pep talk every time she was faced with a dilemma or danger. I didn’t understand the big deal with sharing what her curse was with Cole , that annoyed me a bit but hey ho! it is what it is. I liked Cole a lot but one question I have for the author is that, as he is a shifter, whenever he shifts from animal back to man “what happens to his clothes?” random I know but I kept waiting for that awkward moment but it was never addressed and I have read a lot of fo books about wolves and shifters. I like the continuity that the author puts into this series that I am really keen to read book 3 to find out where the story leads.
If you love a really good fairy tale retelling with a really good spin then this is definitely for you.

A dangerous world where she will have to fight tooth and nail to defend the power and freedom that is her birthright. …only Allie hates to fight.

The Review  ★★★☆☆

I was hoping to not start yet another series that will take years to complete, but when I read the synopsis, I just couldn’t resist not reading this book.

The book starts off really great….. Allie Carmicheal seems like just na ordinary high school student who has moved around a lot due to her parents job. She also has a hard time making new friends as everyone seems to flinch at her touch. When she moves to the Kelleys Island with her parents she runs into Aiden and she is shocked to realize that he does not flinch when their hands touch. From then on Allie and Aiden start to form a friendship but then strange things Allie cant explain seem to happening around her. And when she awakes in agony on her 16th birthday she is told she is immortal and is going through an awakening which is something they all go through. As Allie starts to come into her powers she struggles to maintain a form of normalcy in her everyday life and this new immortality which she is not entirely sure she really wants.

What did I like? The first 20% and the last 30% of the book, basically the pages in between didn’t do a lot for me. I know the author was giving depth to the characters but I just felt that most of it was not necessary. At Aiden and Sasha’s birthday where the family cam along, there were so many of them to remember that I found myself glossing over most of it. To me the important focus of the story was Allie, Aiden, Sasha and Vince. I feel we didn’t get to know anything about Vince but I digress. The main character Allie…. where do I start? I found her annoying and dare I say it infuriating. There was a bit too much of teenage angst in this book and that sometime made me question the direction of the story. She was quite selfish and childish which made me want to give up sometimes.

I really liked Aiden, he was a bit misunderstood but his loyalty and unwavering love was just awesome. It was fun to see how the relationship between him and Allie developed. I am still rooting for Aiden as I think he is just adorable. The history of the other immortals seemed to confuse me so I guess I might have to get that straight before I read the next book.
The book ended in quite a cliffhanger, so I am keen to find out what happens next.

Synopsis
Kira Sutherland ~
After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her ‘boyfriend’), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated…),and being labeled as having ‘issues’ in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:
Continue her ‘therapy’ (where she’s told the ghost is a hallucination and also gets her legs ogled too often…)  Or  Go to Starkfield Academy, a boarding school for “Crazies and Convicts” (as the social media sites call them.)
She chooses the latter…
~ Cory Rand ~
Cory Rand has not had an easy life. His mother died in a car accident when he was twelve, and so did his mother’s best friend…sort of. You see, Janice made a promise to take care of Cory just before she died, and so she lingers. Undead. A ghost that watches out for him.
Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual – he has a weakness) he’s left with two choices
Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks…)  or Go to  Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he’ll get an education.
He chooses the latter…
It’s at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.
Things he’s always ignored.
Until now.

About the Book

Book one in the Seekers dystopian trilogy

“But what are we without dreams?”

A thousand years ago the Darkness came–a time of violence and social collapse when technology ran rampant. But the vicars of the Temple of Light brought peace, ushering in an era of blessed simplicity. For ten centuries they kept the madness at bay with “temple magic,” eliminating the rush of progress that nearly caused the destruction of everything.

Orah and Nathaniel, have grew up in a tiny village, longing for more from life but unwilling to challenge the status quo. When Orah is summoned for a “teaching”—the brutal coming-of-age ritual that binds the young to the Light—Nathaniel follows in a foolhardy attempt to save her.
In the prisons of Temple City, they discover a secret that launches them on a journey to find the forbidden keep, where a truth from the past might unleash the potential of their people, but may also cost them their lives.

“A tightly executed first fantasy installment that champions the exploratory spirit.” — Kirkus Reviews
“I found the world-building surrounding the people of the Ponds so descriptive that I was transported to their homes and way of life, and when the trio embarked on their journey, I could clearly picture them every step of the way. If you’re looking for a classic fantasy quest wrapped in a fascinating, dark archaic world, then this novel will not disappoint you.” — K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite
“The quality of its intelligence, imagination, and prose raises The Children of Darkness to the level of literature.” — Awesome Indies

About the Author

The urge to write first struck at age sixteen when working on a newsletter at a youth encampment in the woods of northern Maine. It may have been the wild night when lightning flashed at sunset followed by the northern lights rippling after dark. Or maybe it was the newsletter’s editor, a girl with eyes the color of the ocean. But he was inspired to write about the blurry line between reality and the fantastic.

Using two fingers and lots of white-out, he religiously typed five pages a day  throughout college and well into his twenties. Then life intervened. He paused to raise two sons and pursue a career, in the process — and without prior plan — becoming a well-known entrepreneur in the software industry, founding several successful companies. When he found time again to daydream, the urge to write returned.

In this new stage of his life, he’s published Along the Watchtower in June, 2013 and The Daughter of the Sea and the Sky in May, 2014. The Children of Darkness, the first of the Seekers series, a dystopian trilogy, was published in June, 2015. It’s sequel, The Stuff of Stars, will be out in November, 2015.

David and his wife split their time between Cape Cod, Florida and anywhere else that catches their fancy. He no longer limits himself to five pages a day and is thankful every keystroke for the invention of the word processor.

About the Book

Kadence Sparrow wasn’t born a devil’s child—she was turned into one. Now, she’s hiding from the truth, and running for her life.

For years, Kade’s true nature has lurked behind an illusion, so when her dad gets another job transfer, she knows the drill: no close friends, no boyfriends, and most importantly: don’t expose what she is. Ever. Keeping secrets is easy. Lies are second nature. So is the loneliness—and the fear, but when the Shadows attack, and Kade meets Cole Spires, she could expose everything she’s trying to hide.

As one of the Celestial Children, Cole lives by an oath: defend the Ward, protect the Primordial race, guard the gateways, and stick to his own. Everything else is a distraction, and besides, he’s lost enough. Cole’s job is clear, and no one his age does it better. So, when he meets Kade in a club downtown, he assumes she just wants his attention. Most girls do, but Cole soon realizes … Kade isn’t like most girls.

The children of heaven and hell are living among us, fighting an age-old war. And falling for someone from the opposition is not an option. But a chance encounter between Kade and Cole will blur the rules, as Kade’s journey to keep her truth hidden catapults them together and into a web of lies, forcing her to not only face the demon inside her, but to answer the hardest question of all.

Which is thicker—blood or water?

The Review ★★★★★

If you have not read book 1 please stop now or it will be ruined for you. And while I had a lot of difficulty reading book 1 because of the slow pace book 2 did not disappoint.

So we pick off right were book one left off and even though they defeated Silas there are many more enemies that they will come against in this book. There is the introduction of some really great new characters which do not detract from the main story, rather it adds to it making the story that much better.

Bree and Rowan are still going strong and this is not the only relationship going strong. Dagan and Sidonie are inseparable and lets just say Finn and Adelphie are going places….

There is a lot more world building in the book and not to mention the faeries,  and plenty of magic. We also get to know more about Sidone and her past.

I really enjoyed this book as it was at a much better pace than book 1. I believe Wildfire is a massive step up from the first book. There were a lot of secrets and questions from book 1 that were revealed in this book. The twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page. I wasn’t happy with the cliffhanger ending but I guess it keep me wanting more from the next installment of the series. This is one definitely for the adult fantasy fans, I don’t always read these type of book but trust me you wont be disappointed.

J.D wrightAbout the Author

Writing has always been a hobby of mine, beginning as a young child. It was a way to cope with losing my father at seven years of age. I started with poetry and was featured several times on the amazing poetry blog, Autumn Leaves, by Sondra Ball. My love for poetry soon led to writing songs in middle school and beyond, which I still do occasionally. Music has always been an important part of my existence, so writing songs came naturally to me. In high school, I started my own novel, however, life got in the way and I never finished it.

Fast forward many years later and I find myself married with four children, absorbed in my busy life with commitments to my family, work, school, church, and charities, among other things. One day I came across my old binder, with notes from my first novel, and it was with those notes that I conjured up the elusive Everealm.

I write to please readers such as myself, who have a love for fantasy and romance, but like a little danger and sex in their reading. I wrote the book with a mature audience in mind, who can appreciate a hearty imaginary world with magic and the unknown, but want more than fluffy love stories with wizards in them. They want the romance, magic, and danger, all wrapped into one.
