The children of dragons and humans, the dracons, control eighty percent of the world’s governments. Humans worldwide are either subservient or prey. On the small vacation island of Mabi, humans call for war.

Sixteen year old Dakota Kekoa lives a double life. By day, she pretends to be a human to infiltrate Mabi Academy, a ‘human’s only’ high-school. At night, she works as a henchman for her draconic mafia family, utilizing her ability to steal and manipulate emotions.
When Dakota’s human friend is kidnapped, she takes on the mission to find her. This is not just any mission though; she is diving head first into the escalating conflict between humans and dracons. As more girls disappear and some are discovered dead, Dakota realizes her first honorable mission may also be her last

The Review

The story is set somewhere in the future, in a place where the world has come to accept the existence of Dargons or dracons (Dragon offspring) and other mystical creatures.

The story is about Dakota and she lives a double life, by day she is a student tracking the children of her grandfathers archenemy and by night she works as a henchman for her family (Mafia maybe?) Every dracon  inherits a special power when they  hit 16 and while some might be considered awesome, Dakota’s is one that is quite rare and unique. Just like her father, she can see and examine souls and can even extract portions of it with your emotions, which makes her very dangerous. But to to keep her power in check and blend in she wears a charm that helps dampen her powers and this also keeps her under the radar from other dracons and humans who may be after her.

When human girls start to disappear no one seems to take notice but when Dakota’s friend Honua goes missing she doesn’t hesitate to put herself in danger to save her. But in order to do this she needs to work alongside another dracon who she believes hates her.

What did I think? I love reading about angels but surprisingly I have fallen in love with Dragons as well. There is just something so magical about having such an ancient creature feature in modern stories. If you loved the Talon series by Julie Kagawa then you will love this one even more. I liked the bits about the history of the dracons, the author made sure all the facts about the story were laid out properly, giving the reader a great foundation for the story.

I felt that the characters were well developed that it seemed like they were my friends, ok ok…. Maybe neighbors I don’t talk to but know. You know what I mean…..

Dakota, was a really awesome character in the book. As the lead and focus, I did find her a little annoying sometimes but then again I would have probably made similar decisions if I were in her shoes. Keanu started off as favourite for me imagine my surprise when the plot unfolded towards the end.

Now lets talk Wyvern, I didn’t like him soo much in the beginning, he started off as quite smug and proud, then affectionate and romantic. The description of his dragon was just soo amazing. His one one liners were also quite fun.

Which female wouldn’t find a dominant male like him irresistible? Ah well join the club. Such a fantastic end to book 1. Cant wait to see what the rest of the story unfolds.
