Julia never believed in magic.
Julia Long is starting her senior year with an extra dose of crazy. The dreams of cultish, bloody rituals are weird enough, but the victim in her lifelike dreams is her new classmate, Southern charmer Graham.
Graham admits he was a Phoenix — part of a centuries old secret society — but swears he left it all behind. As Julia works with Graham to figure out why she is dreaming about his past, she’s discovering she has other abilities. She heals Graham’s migraines with a touch, and there’s her superhuman strength that comes and goes. Julia doesn’t know where her new talents come from, but there’s no denying that when Graham is near, her powers kick into overdrive.
But the Phoenix Society wants Graham back. They need his blood to awaken the magic they seek, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get it.
Can Julia uncover the truth behind her connection to Graham? How far will Julia go in order to save Graham and stop the Phoenixes from harnessing this powerful magic?

The Review

All I can say is wow! I found out that this is the author’s debut novel and if you ask me it is an awesome YA debut.

I didn’t have a lot of expectations when I started the book but trust me I was greatly impressed.

The story centers around 16year old Julia, who like every other teenager who is just trying to get through her senior year without any issues. Her mother left when she was still very young so its just been her and her dad. Life seems plain and simple until she turned 16 and starts dreaming about a ritual that seems to have already happened. To her these are just random dreams until she sees her new classmate and hottie Graham in one of her dreams.

On one of her lunches with Graham he reveals to her that he is a phoenix, 1/5th of a old secret society but that doesn’t help her understand why he is in her dreams. Julia also discovers that she is able to heal Graham with just a simple touch, everything is getting strange and no one has the answers that she needs. In one of her dreams she meets a woman who looks like her mother who give her some advise about who she is and what she must do. But Julia is running out of time as the secret society is part of want him back to complete a ritual. When Graham is kidnapped its up to Julia to try to find Graham and stop the ritual which could have dire consequences if the power of the Phoenix falls into the wrong hand.

The book started off a bit slow as it was hard to understand what Julia was dreaming about. I kept hoping she would dream more and get the help she needed but that didn’t seem to happen. As the reader I felt as clueless as Julia as there was no one to help her understand the changes or what power she had.

I found Julia a tad bit annoying although if I was in her position I would be worse so I guess she held her own. The betrayals in the story was one I didn’t expect and everything kept me guessing. I know this is the start of a trilogy so I am eager to find out how book 2 goes. I really hope it can rival book 1 as I have really high hopes for this trilogy.
