About the book

H.A.L.F. 9 has taken his first breath of desert air and his first steps in the human world. Created to be a weapon, he proved too powerful for his makers and has lived a sedated life hidden from humans. But H.A.L.F. 9 has escaped the underground lab he called home, and the sedation has worn off. He has never been more alive. More powerful. Or more deadly.

Erika Holt longs to ride her motorcycle east until pavement meets shore. She bides her time until graduation when she’ll say adios to the trailer she shares with her alcoholic mother and memories of her dead father. But a typical night in the desert with friends thrusts Erika into a situation more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Circumstances push the two together, and each must make a fateful choice. Will Erika help H.A.L.F. 9 despite her “don’t get involved” rule? And will H.A.L.F. 9 let Erika live even though he was trained to kill?

The two may need to forget their rules and training and if either is to survive the dangers of the deep beneath them.

The Review

Rating: ★★★★

I was offered an arc copy in exchange for an honest review but to be honest even if I wasn’t offered I would have still chosen to read this book.
The book opens with Lucia, a young woman who is heavily pregnant, living in a place where she seems like she is being held hostage. Before that she was homeless with no one to turn to and when she was approached to be part of a program where she would be paid half a million dollars to be pregnant she thought she just won the lottery.

Fast forward 17years Half 9 has escaped from the facility he has been held in for his whole life and as he takes his first breath he feels more powerful that he ever has. While is on the run he comes across Erika, Jack and Ian who are in the dessert and are in trouble. Half 9 comes to their rescue but also Commander Sturgis, one of Half 9’s makers has come to retrieve him. In that moment Half 9 will choose to either go back to the lab or he will save Erika and her friends.

Situations throw Half 9, Erika, jack and Ian together and soon they realise that they somehow need each other to survive. Well to be honest Half 9 didn’t really need them but he soon started to enjoy the concept of having humans that actually cared for him after being locked up for most of his life. There were moments when I thought there might have been a kind of attraction between Half 9 and Erika but I guess I made that up in my head.

What did I like about the book? It wasn’t your typical YA story, or Alien invasion story. It felt more original, I mean how many stories do you know that have half human, half alien people in them? The pace of the book was great. I liked the characters especially Half 9 or Tex as he was named by Erika. The banter in the book was great. I must admit I did like Sturgis. Her character could instill fear in her subordinates by just the count of her footsteps. Now that is power.

What didn’t I like? There were parts of the book that I felt dragged on a bit, like most times where we spent time inside Erika’s mind and her motivating herself to keep going.

I sometimes felt the book was more about Erika that Tex which was a bit strange for me. I somehow expected much more from Tex’s character, he was a bit bland for me, but then again being half human can do that to you.

Apart from that I actually enjoyed reading the book and cant wait for the next book in the series to see what actually does happen to them.

Go on give it a read! I’m sure you will love it….
