Stella Cross’s heart is poisoned. After years on the transplant waiting list, she’s running out of hope that she’ll ever see her eighteenth birthday. Then, miraculously, Stella receives the transplant she needs to survive.
Determined to embrace everything she came so close to losing, Stella throws herself into her new life. But her recovery is marred with strange side effects: Nightmares. Hallucinations. A recurring pain that flares every day at the exact same moment. Then Stella meets Levi Zin, the new boy on everyone’s radar at her Seattle prep school. Stella has never felt more drawn to anyone in her life, and soon she and Levi can barely stand to be apart.
Stella is convinced that Levi is her soul mate. Why else would she literally ache for him when they are apart?
After all, the heart never lies…does it?
I honestly did not know what to expect when I started this book. I actually thought it was a nice cute love story where an unpopular girl gets another chance at life and falls madly in love with the new popular kid in school right? WRONG!
The story is about Stella. Stella has a heart condition and might die if she doesn’t get a heart transplant soon. Then suddenly one day she gets new heart, they never tell you much about the donor but all that mattered is that Stella’s life can move forward.
Stella moves back home and is healing slowly and is happy to get back in to swing of things, she meets up and hangs out every day with her friends and Brynn and Henry. But now there is a new boy in school and he has caught the attention of everyone including Stella and one day when their eyes meet she feels something she has never felt for anyone else.
Soon Stella and Levi are inseparable, spending every waking moment getting to know each other but also Stella is slowly starting to lose herself that when she is apart from Levi it seems like she is literally losing her mind. Slowly strange things seem to start happening that causes Stella to stop and question a lot about her relationship with Levi. Like who he really is and where does he go when he leaves her.
This book was really strange for me as it quickly went from lovey dovey to dark twisted thriller. I still don’t understand everything about the story, like what did he do with the heart? I don’t want to give spoilers, as you need to read it to experience it. The story is one that will truly linger with you for a while. I must confess that even though the book was creepy I really did enjoy the story. The pace of the story was quite good although there were parts of the story that were unnecessary, like when Stella was at home just drifting in and out of sleep and wallowing in self-pity.
My favorite character was Henry. Although I thought he was a sucker, he is what I would call a really loyal friend. I would recommend this title for anyone who wants a great read with a bit of a dark side to it. It’s not you typical YA book.
In terms of a soundtrack for the book, I think its safe to say Nirvana will do just fine as that was mostly in the book. “Feels like teenage spirit” just because they are high school kids, “Come as you are” and “About a girl”. Throw in The Pretender by Foo Fighters! You will understand when you read the book.
